About Zhanjiang

湛江简介

History

Zhanjiang sits at the southernmost tip of mainland China on the Leizhou Peninsula, where Guangdong Province meets the South China Sea. Once known as Guangzhouwan (广州湾), it was leased to France from 1899 to 1945 and served as a French colonial concession — a history still visible today in colonial-era architecture along Xiashan's Haibin Road.

The city was one of China's first 14 coastal open cities designated in 1984, and its natural deep-water harbour made it a major port and naval base. The Zhanjiang Gulf separates the peninsula from the Donghai Island (湛江东海岛), one of China's largest offshore islands.

Long associated with fishing, petrochemicals, and agriculture (especially sugarcane and tropical fruit), Zhanjiang is now investing heavily in steel (Baowu and HBIS have mega-plants here), green energy, and tourism infrastructure.

Why Go?

Zhanjiang offers an authentic South China coastal experience with none of the tourist crowds of Sanya or Xiamen. Highlights include the Huguangyan Maar Lake — a rare volcanic crater lake surrounded by subtropical forest — pristine beaches on Donghai Island, extraordinary seafood at harbour-front markets, and one of China's largest mangrove nature reserves.

The city's French colonial legacy gives its Xiashan district a faded, elegantly worn character distinct from most Chinese cities. And the cost of living is genuinely affordable by Chinese standards.

When to Go

Best: October – April. Temperatures are pleasant (18–25°C), skies are clear, and the sea is calm. December and January are the coolest months but still mild.

Avoid: June – September. Peak typhoon season brings heavy rains and the risk of tropical storms. Temperatures can reach 35°C with high humidity. If you do visit in summer, the seafood is at its freshest and prices are lower.

  • 🌸 Spring (Mar–May): Warm, sometimes misty. Flowers blooming.
  • ☀️ Summer (Jun–Sep): Hot, humid, typhoon risk. Budget season.
  • 🍂 Autumn (Oct–Nov): Best weather. Clear skies, calm seas.
  • ❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb): Mild and dry. Ideal for sightseeing.

Zhanjiang's Food Culture

Zhanjiang is Guangdong's undisputed seafood capital. The city's motto among food lovers is "天下第一鲜" — "the freshest under heaven." White-cut crab (白灼蟹), steamed crab with garlic, roasted oysters, mud crab, mantis shrimp, and sea urchin are staples found at any waterfront restaurant.

The local cuisine draws from Leizhou folk traditions, featuring bold flavours and liberal use of chilli, ginger, and lemongrass. Zhanjiang chicken (湛江鸡) — free-range, simply prepared and dipped in ginger-scallion oil — is considered one of the best chicken preparations in all of China.

The city's markets, particularly Xiashan seafood market and the Chikan harbour stalls, are where locals buy their morning catch. Night markets along the waterfront offer sizzling barbecued shellfish at very low prices.

Getting There & Around

交通出行
✈️
By Air

Zhanjiang Wuchuan Airport (ZHA) serves domestic routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Haikou. No international flights; connect via Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (2.5 hrs by HSR).

🚄
High-Speed Rail

The Guangzhou–Zhanjiang HSR line connects Zhanjiang West Station to Guangzhou South in approx. 2 hours. Services also run to Shenzhen (~3 hrs), Hong Kong West Kowloon (~3.5 hrs), and Nanning (~2 hrs).

🚌
Long-Distance Bus

Coaches from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Haikou arrive at Zhanjiang Bus Terminal in the city centre. Journey from Guangzhou: ~4–5 hrs. Comfortable and inexpensive.

🚢
Ferry

Ferry services connect Zhanjiang to Haikou (Hainan) across the Qiongzhou Strait, taking around 2 hours. Useful for onward travel to Hainan Island. Services run from Xu Wen Port and Hai'an Port.

🚌
City Buses

Zhanjiang has an extensive public bus network covering all districts including Chikan, Xiashan, Mazhang and Donghai Island. Fares: 1–3 CNY. Route maps available at main bus stops. Google Maps works with VPN.

🛵
DiDi & Taxis

DiDi (China's Uber) is the most convenient way to get around. Download before arrival. Taxis (green/yellow) are plentiful and metered. E-bike and scooter rentals widely available for short-distance trips.

🚲
Cycling

Shared bikes (Meituan Bike, Hello Bike) are available in central Zhanjiang. Ideal for the Xiashan waterfront promenade and Jinsha Bay. Donghai Island has wide coastal roads suitable for longer cycling routes.

🚤
Island Transfers

Donghai Island is accessible by road (bridge). The Naozhou Island (硇洲岛) requires a short ferry crossing (~20 min) from Donghai harbour. Local boats can be chartered for coastal exploration.

Getting Around Tips

DiDi is essential: download the app, link a Chinese bank card or international card, and use it for all inter-district travel. Drivers rarely speak English — use the app's map interface.

Zhanjiang is spread out: the main urban districts (Chikan, Xiashan, Mazhang) are separated by several kilometres. Budget 30–45 minutes for cross-city journeys. Huguangyan is about 20 km from central Chikan.

Hire a driver for day trips: for Donghai Island, Huguangyan, and the Mangrove Reserve, a full-day driver (约 200–400 CNY) is the most flexible option. Hotel concierges can arrange this.
