History & Overview

历史与概况

🏛 Ancient History

Wuyishan's recorded history stretches back over 4,000 years. The Min people inhabited the cliffs — their boat-shaped coffins (悬棺, xuán guān) are still visible suspended in the rocky faces above the Nine-Bend Stream. By the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), the area was already a sacred ceremonial site. The First Qin Emperor himself reportedly dispatched envoys to offer sacrifices to the mountain spirits.

🍃 Tea Capital of the World

Wuyishan is the birthplace of some of the world's most celebrated teas. Dahongpao (大红袍, "Big Red Robe") — the legendary mother-tree oolong — grows from just six ancient plants on the cliffs of Jiulongke. The area also gave rise to Lapsang Souchong (正山小种), the world's first black tea, exported along the ancient Tea Road to Europe in the 17th century.

🎓 Confucian Academy

Zhu Xi (1130–1200 CE), China's greatest Neo-Confucian philosopher, studied, taught, and wrote at the Wuyi Academy (武夷精舍) for nearly 50 years. His influence on Chinese philosophy rivals that of Confucius himself. The mountain's scholarly tradition made it a pilgrimage site for generations of Chinese intellectuals and earned Wuyishan the title of "the Confucian Mountain."
