Overview & History
概况与历史Wuxi (无锡, "without tin") is a prefecture-level city in southern Jiangsu Province, nestled on the northern shore of China's third-largest freshwater lake, Lake Taihu (太湖). Just 30 minutes by high-speed rail from Suzhou and 90 minutes from Shanghai, it is one of the most accessible yet underrated cities in the Yangtze River Delta.
The city traces its roots back over 3,000 years to the Zhou Dynasty, when tin deposits in the region were exhausted — hence the name "no tin." By the Tang and Song dynasties, Wuxi had developed into a major silk-weaving and trade hub along the Grand Canal, a prosperity reflected in its elegant Jiangnan architecture and classical gardens.
In the 20th century, Wuxi was among China's earliest industrial cities and is credited as the birthplace of the "township and village enterprise" model that powered the reform era's economic miracle. Today it ranks among China's top-tier cities for GDP, renowned for its semiconductor, Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced manufacturing industries — as well as the UNESCO-recognised tradition of Yixing Zisha (紫砂) purple clay teaware.
