History & Overview
历史概览📜 History
Founded as a garrison town in 1404 during the early Ming Dynasty, Tianjin (天津, "Heaven's Ford") rose to prominence as the principal port gateway to Beijing. Following the Second Opium War and the Convention of Peking (1860), nine foreign powers established concessions along the Haihe River, each building their own churches, banks, and mansions — leaving an architectural legacy unique in all of China.
In the 20th century Tianjin became an industrial powerhouse, producing salt, steel, and textiles. Today it is one of China's four direct-administered municipalities alongside Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing.
