Ancient capital, industrial powerhouse, and gateway to Shanxi's UNESCO wonders — Taiyuan rewards the curious traveller with 2,500 years of history, spectacular temples, and some of China's finest noodles.
Taiyuan — known as Long Cheng (Dragon City) — is the capital of Shanxi Province and one of China's great ancient cities. Founded over 2,500 years ago, it served as capital to three dynasties (Zhao, Former Qin, Northern Han) and as a secondary capital to six others including the Tang.
Surrounded on three sides by mountains and bisected by the Fen River, Taiyuan was a vital military and cultural bastion for millennia. Today it blends this storied heritage with a modern industrial identity — one of China's most important coal and steel centres.
Taiyuan has a semi-arid monsoon climate. Summers are warm and humid; winters are cold and dry. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for sightseeing.
