Overview 苏州概览
Essential ReadingThe Venice of the East
Founded over 2,500 years ago during the Spring and Autumn period, Suzhou is one of the oldest cities in China and widely regarded as one of its most beautiful. Nestled in Jiangsu Province by Lake Tai, just 90 kilometres from Shanghai, the city earned its legendary reputation through centuries of classical garden design, canal culture, and the art of silk weaving.
The historic centre preserves an intricate web of canals, traditional siheyuan courtyard houses, ornamental bridges, and nine classical gardens inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Yet Suzhou is far from a museum piece — its Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) is one of China's most successful economic zones, making it one of the wealthiest cities in the country.
Why go? Classical Chinese garden architecture at its finest, UNESCO canals, a vibrant silk and embroidery tradition, delicious Jiangnan cuisine, proximity to Shanghai, and a city compact enough to explore on foot and by bicycle.
