Why Visit Qufu?

Qufu is one of China's most important cultural pilgrimage destinations — the birthplace and resting place of Confucius (551–479 BC), the philosopher whose teachings shaped Chinese civilisation, governance, education, and family life for over 2,500 years. In a country of mega-cities, Qufu is refreshingly small, intimate, and deeply authentic. There are no skyscrapers here — local law prohibits any building from exceeding the 81-foot height of Dacheng Hall in respect of the great sage. One fifth of the city's 630,000 residents still carry the surname Kong, making them direct descendants of Confucius himself.

History & Context
📜
Capital of Lu Kingdom
Qufu served as the capital of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC) of the Zhou Dynasty. It was in this intellectual and cultural milieu that Confucius (Kong Qiu) was born in 551 BC and developed his foundational philosophy of ethics, governance, and ritual.
🏛️
UNESCO World Heritage
In 1994, UNESCO inscribed the Temple, Cemetery and Kong Family Mansion as World Cultural Heritage Sites. The Temple was first built in 478 BC on the site of Confucius's former residence — just one year after his death. It has been expanded, rebuilt, and revered ever since.
👨‍👩‍👧
The Kong Clan Legacy
The Kong family has maintained the longest continuous genealogical record in the world — over 80 generations. Today, approximately 125,000 residents of Qufu carry the surname Kong. No building in the city may exceed the height of Dacheng Hall out of respect for the sage's enduring authority.
🌏
Global Confucian Influence
Confucianism became the state orthodoxy during the Han Dynasty (206 BC) and has since shaped education, governance, family structure, and social ethics across China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and beyond. Qufu is therefore not just a Chinese heritage site — it is a pilgrimage point for all of East Asia.
Sights & Activities

Qufu's must-see attractions span UNESCO heritage sites, peaceful sacred landscapes, hotels, dining, and living cultural ceremonies.

No direct flights to Qufu. The nearest airports are Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport (TNA) ~130 km away, and Jining Qufu Airport ~45 km away (limited routes). From Jinan airport, take a shuttle or taxi to Jinan Railway Station then HSR to Qufu East (~1.5 hrs total).
🚌
By Long-distance Bus
Buses connect Qufu to Jinan, Jining, Tai'an, and other Shandong cities. The long-distance bus station is in the west of the city. Less convenient than HSR but cheaper. Buses also run between Qufu and the town of Yanzhou (15 km), which has a conventional rail hub.
🚕
Getting Around Qufu
Qufu is a small, walkable city. Most attractions are within 2 km of each other in the historic centre. Options: taxis (metered, reliable, ~¥10–15 base), Didi (app-based ride-hailing), pedicabs/rickshaws (fun for sightseeing), horse-drawn carts (popular to the Cemetery of Confucius), and local buses along Gulou Jie.
🚲
Cycling & Walking
The flat terrain makes cycling an excellent option. Bike rentals available near the tourist area. Walking between the Temple, Mansion, and old town takes 20–30 minutes and lets you soak up the atmosphere of the ancient streets and city walls. The Cemetery is ~2 km north of the Mansion — take a horse cart or pedicab.
🗺️
Tourist Information
The Qufu Tourist Information Center is located at 4 Gulou Beijie. Staff provide maps, accommodation advice, and touring assistance. The combined San Kong ticket (Temple + Mansion + Cemetery) costs ¥140 and is available at the main entrance. Children and seniors receive half-price or free entry.
Shopping & Souvenirs

Qufu is famous for traditional calligraphy supplies and Confucian-themed crafts.

🖌️
Four Treasures of the Study
The classic Qufu souvenirs: calligraphy brushes, ink stones, ink sticks, and rice paper. Head to Chunqiu Ge at 5 Gulou Beijie (open 8 am–7:30 pm) — a well-stocked shop that also sells ceramics, jade, jewellery, and cloisonné, and accepts international credit cards.
🏺
Confucian Crafts & Art
Look for hand-carved seals with classical Chinese characters, rubbings of Han Dynasty stele inscriptions, porcelain with Confucian motifs, and miniature bronze ceremonial vessels. The streets surrounding the Confucius Temple are lined with craft stalls.
🌾
Local Products
Qufu rice is locally famous across China. Look also for Shandong peanuts, dried vegetables, and traditional Kongfu condiments (including sauces used in the famous Kong Family Banquet). The night market on Wumaci Jie is great for food souvenirs and snacks.
💡
Shopping Tips
Avoid buying calligraphy goods inside the scenic areas — prices are much higher. Walk the approach road from the entrance to the Cemetery of Confucius; vendors along this path sell the same items at a fraction of the in-park price. Always compare prices and politely bargain at market stalls.
General Information
💳
Money & Payments
China uses RMB (Chinese Yuan, ¥). Mobile payments via WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate — most stalls, restaurants, and even taxis accept QR codes. ATMs are available in the city centre. Major hotels accept international credit cards. Exchange currency at hotels or banks.
📶
Connectivity
China blocks Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, and many Western apps. A VPN is essential for international visitors if you need these services — set one up before arriving in China. Local SIM cards from China Mobile, Unicom, or Telecom are cheap and available at airports. Major hotels have WiFi.
🗣️
Language
Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua) is spoken throughout Qufu. English is limited outside major hotels and tourist offices. Carry a translation app (Google Translate works offline with downloaded language packs). Key phrases: 你好 (Nǐ hǎo) — Hello; 谢谢 (Xièxiè) — Thank you; 多少钱?(Duōshǎo qián?) — How much?
Opening Hours
The Three Confucian Sites open for ticketing at 8:30 AM and stop selling at 4:30 PM. Morning and evening gate-opening ceremonies at Wanren Palace Wall are popular — arrive early for a good spot. Most attractions are closed for major maintenance periods; check ahead. Tickets: Temple ¥80, Mansion ¥60, Cemetery ¥10.
🏥
Safety & Health
Qufu is very safe for tourists. The main concerns are: pickpockets in crowded scenic areas (keep valuables secure), and summer heat — bring water, sunscreen, and a hat when touring outdoor sites. Tap water is not safe to drink; buy bottled water widely available. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all visitors to China.
🎫
Ticket Tips
Buy the combined San Kong ticket (¥140) for the best value. Students and children receive 50% off; seniors 60+ enter free. Consider hiring a local tour guide at the main entrance — their explanations of Confucian history and symbolism greatly enrich the visit. Guide fees are typically ¥150–¥300 for a half-day tour.
