UNESCO World Heritage City · The Starting Point of the Maritime Silk Road · Fujian, China
Once the greatest port in the medieval world — described by Marco Polo as surpassing Alexandria — Quanzhou was China's principal maritime gateway from the Tang through Ming dynasties. In 2021, UNESCO inscribed the city's "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China" as a World Heritage Site, encompassing 22 component parts.
Today this vibrant Fujian city blends extraordinary historical depth with outstanding Hokkien cuisine, living religious traditions spanning Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Manichaeism, and Christianity, plus easy day-trips to the coast and Wuyishan.
