About the City

China's Revolutionary Capital

Nanchang (南昌), the capital of Jiangxi Province, sits on the western bank of the Gan River in southeast China. With over 2,200 years of recorded history, it was established as a Han dynasty commandery in 202 BCE. Its name literally means "southern prosperity."

On 1 August 1927, the Nanchang Uprising launched the Communist Party's armed struggle, making the city the symbolic birthplace of the People's Liberation Army — a fact that permeates every corner of the city.

Beyond its revolutionary heritage, Nanchang is a thriving modern metropolis — gateway to Poyang Lake (China's largest freshwater lake), home to a fast-growing aerospace and electronics industry, and increasingly popular for its lively food scene and ancient lakeside parks.
