Overview 概况

Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟, "Nine Village Valley") is one of China's most breathtaking natural wonders — a high-altitude national park in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of northern Sichuan Province. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1997, it is renowned worldwide for its extraordinary concentration of coloured lakes, multi-tiered waterfalls, and sweeping alpine forests.

The valley takes its name from the nine Tibetan villages historically nestled within it, whose inhabitants have shaped the cultural landscape of the region for centuries. Today, the park covers roughly 720 km² and encompasses three main valley branches — the Shuzheng Valley, the Rize Valley, and the Zechawa Valley — each offering distinct scenery and iconic landmarks.

What makes Jiuzhaigou truly unique is the extraordinary chemistry of its waters. Rich in calcium carbonate and travertine, the lakes shimmer in impossible hues — electric turquoise, emerald green, deep sapphire, milky white — that shift with the angle of sunlight and the season. Submerged ancient tree trunks, visible through the crystal-clear depths, add to the otherworldly atmosphere.

The park closed for extensive restoration following a major earthquake in August 2017, reopening in phases from 2019 onwards. Today it welcomes visitors on a strictly managed ticketed entry system with daily visitor caps to protect its fragile ecosystem.

Why Go? 为什么去?

💎
Unearthly Coloured Lakes
Over 108 lakes glow in turquoise, emerald, sapphire, and milky white — colours that shift by season, time of day, and light. Five Flower Lake, Long Lake, and Mirror Lake are among the most photographed natural wonders in Asia.
🌊
Cascading Waterfalls
Nuorilang Waterfall — at 270m wide, the broadest highland waterfall in China — and Pearl Shoal Waterfall's fan of white cascades are among the park's 17 dramatic falls. Winter transforms them into colossal frozen sculptures.
🍁
Seasonal Spectacle
Each season transforms the valley: spring cherry blossoms frame turquoise pools; summer brings dense green forests; autumn turns the hillsides gold, red, and amber; winter freezes the falls and dusts the peaks in snow.
🐼
Giant Panda Habitat
Jiuzhaigou lies in the heart of the giant panda's natural range. The park's dense bamboo forests and river corridors form a vital corridor linking panda populations across northern Sichuan.
🏔
Tibetan Culture
The nine Tibetan and Qiang villages within the park — including Shuzheng, Zechawa, and Heye — offer vibrant cultural encounters: traditional architecture, prayer flags, Tibetan folk performances, and authentic local cuisine.
🌏
UNESCO Double Heritage
One of only a handful of sites in the world holding both World Heritage Site and Man and Biosphere Reserve status, recognising both its outstanding universal natural value and its significance as a living cultural landscape.

Eating 饮食

Food inside the park is limited and overpriced — bring snacks and water. The best eating is in Zhangzha Town and nearby villages, where local Tibetan and Sichuan cuisine is superb.

🍲
Nuorilang Restaurant
诺日朗餐厅
The park's only in-park restaurant, at the Nuorilang junction. Self-service buffet with Chinese staples. Convenient but expensive (¥80–120/person). Good for a warming lunch mid-hike. Expect queues at peak times. Google rating 4.1/5.
🥩
Tibetan Hotpot
藏式火锅
A Jiuzhaigou speciality: yak meat, wild mushrooms, potatoes, and highland herbs simmered in a mild, fragrant broth — quite different from fiery Sichuan hotpot. Found at guesthouses and local restaurants throughout Zhangzha Town.
🫙
Zanba & Butter Tea
糌粑 & 酥油茶
The Tibetan staple: roasted barley flour mixed with yak butter, cheese, and tea. Butter tea (po cha) is a salty, warming drink essential at altitude. Try both at local Tibetan teahouses along the village streets.
🍄
Wild Mushroom Dishes
野生菌菜肴
The highland forests yield extraordinary varieties of wild mushrooms — pine mushrooms (松茸), chanterelles, and porcini — stir-fried with garlic or added to soups. A genuine regional delicacy available at guesthouses from late summer through autumn.
🌶
Sichuan Farmhouse Cuisine
四川农家菜
Roadside farmhouse restaurants (农家乐) between Zhangzha Town and the park gate serve hearty, affordable Sichuan food — mapo tofu, braised pork, twice-cooked pork, cold cucumber salads — at fair prices. Chongqing Farmhouse (5★ local rating) is a good option.
🥟
Ming Wei Yi Niu
名为一牛
A local restaurant in Zhangzha Town serving yak beef dishes, stir-fries, and noodles at reasonable prices. Popular with domestic travellers for its clearly marked prices and straightforward honest cooking. Good spot for a filling dinner after a long day in the park.

Drinking 饮品

🍵
Tibetan Butter Tea
酥油茶
The essential highland drink. Brewed with black tea, yak butter, and salt, churned to a frothy consistency. Warming and calorie-rich — ideal at altitude. Available at every Tibetan guesthouse and many roadside stalls. An acquired taste but a genuine cultural experience.
🍶
Tibetan Barley Wine (Qingke Jiu)
青稞酒
A mildly fermented beer brewed from highland barley. Slightly sour, slightly sweet, low alcohol. Available in Tibetan family homes and village restaurants. Look for home-brewed versions served in traditional wooden vessels.
🧋
Yak Milk & Yoghurt
牦牛奶
Fresh yak milk products — warm milk, rich yoghurt, and dried cheese — are sold at village markets and roadside stalls. Exceptionally creamy and nutritious. The yoghurt is often served with local honey or dark sugar.
🏨
Hotel Bars
酒店酒吧
The InterContinental Paradise Resort and Hilton properties have bar lounges serving cocktails, wine, and craft beers alongside scenic mountain views. The InterContinental's greenhouse lounge is particularly atmospheric. Prices are international-standard.

Shopping 购物

🧿
Tibetan Thangka Paintings
Intricately painted Buddhist scroll paintings on cotton or silk. Authentic thangkas are hand-painted and can take months to complete. Sold in galleries along Zhangzha's main street — verify authenticity and ask for a certificate of origin.
💎
Tibetan Jewellery
Silver rings, bracelets, and necklaces set with turquoise, coral, amber, and dzi beads (天珠). Turquoise is particularly associated with Tibetan culture and makes an excellent souvenir. Bargain respectfully — quality varies enormously.
🌿
Dried Herbs & Medicinal Plants
The highlands produce extraordinary medicinal herbs: cordyceps fungus (冬虫夏草), dendrobium orchid, rhodiola, and highland saffron. Genuine cordyceps is extremely valuable — prices of ¥30,000+ per kg are not unusual.
🍄
Dried Wild Mushrooms
Vacuum-packed dried pine mushrooms (松茸), porcini, and morel mushrooms make excellent lightweight gifts. Far cheaper here than in Chengdu or Shanghai, and the quality of highland mushrooms is exceptional.
🧣
Yak Wool Textiles
Warm, lightweight scarves, blankets, and shawls woven from yak wool or a yak/cashmere blend. Often brightly coloured with traditional geometric patterns. Look for handwoven items from local cooperatives rather than factory-made versions.
📿
Prayer Beads & Religious Objects
Mala prayer beads (108 beads, one for each Buddhist affliction), hand prayer wheels, incense, and small statue replicas of Tibetan Buddhist deities. All widely available and represent a meaningful cultural souvenir.

Practical Tips

🎟
Book Tickets Early
Official tickets via the Jiuzhaigou WeChat mini-programme or jiuzhai.com. Peak season (Sep–Oct) sells out weeks ahead. Set an alarm — releases at midnight.
🌅
Arrive at Gate Opening
Be at the main gate before 07:30. The first 2 hours offer boardwalks nearly to yourself, magical morning mist, and the best light for photography.
👟
Wear Proper Footwear
Boardwalks can be wet, icy, or slippery. Waterproof hiking shoes or trail runners are essential. Avoid flip-flops or heels — we're at altitude on mountain terrain.
🥤
Hydrate & Snack Up
Bring 1.5L+ of water — dehydration is faster at altitude. Pack high-energy snacks. In-park food is expensive and limited. Hot drinks from stall vendors are fine.
🌡
Layer Up
Temperature swings of 15°C between morning and afternoon are common. Even in summer, bring a fleece and a windproof jacket. Autumn and winter require full winter gear.
📱
Download WeChat & Alipay
Essential for buying tickets, paying for food, transport, and communicating with locals. Set up before leaving home. Alipay now supports international credit cards.
🚍
Plan Your Bus Strategy
Don't ride the bus everywhere — you'll miss the magic. Take the bus to the farthest point (Long Lake or Five Flower Lake), walk back downhill, and take the bus to skip busy sections.
🌿
Leave No Trace
Jiuzhaigou's ecosystem is extraordinarily fragile. Zero litter, zero picking, zero swimming. Rangers patrol rigorously and fines are issued. Help preserve this wonder for future generations.
