China's coolest summer city, gateway to spectacular karst landscapes, ancient minority cultures, and fiery Guizhou cuisine.
Guiyang (贵阳), capital of Guizhou Province, sits at over 1,000 metres in a highland basin surrounded by dramatic karst mountains. Known as China's "Air Conditioning City," it enjoys naturally cool summers while the rest of China swelters.
Beyond the climate, Guiyang is the gateway to some of China's most spectacular nature — from the thunderous Huangguoshu Waterfall to the ancient stone streets of Qingyan Ancient Town — and to the vivid embroidery, silver jewellery and festivals of the Miao (苗族) and Buyi (布依族) peoples.
The city has reinvented itself as China's big data capital, hosting the Guizhou Big Data Expo and attracting Apple, Huawei, and Tencent server farms to its cooler climate. It's a fascinating collision of ultra-modern digital infrastructure and deep-rooted minority tradition.
