Where the Great Wall Meets the Sea

A coastal city steeped in imperial history — where the eastern terminus of China's Great Wall plunges into the Bohai Sea, sandy beaches stretch for kilometres, and Beidaihe has welcomed China's leaders as a summer retreat for generations.

Imperial Legacy of Qin Huang Dao

The city takes its name — "Island of the Qin Emperor" — from Emperor Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor, who sailed from this very coastline over two thousand years ago in search of an elixir of immortality. During the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), the Great Wall was extended eastward, culminating at Shanhaiguan — the "First Pass Under Heaven" — and ending spectacularly at Laolongtou, where stone fortifications wade into the Bohai Sea. In the late 19th century, Beidaihe became a retreat for foreign diplomats before the Communist Party made it the exclusive summer residence for senior leadership.
